Fitness to fall in love with

2013Jan24_Motivation_BBeauty is in the eye of the beholder and so is your attitude to keeping fit and being healthy. Often it is your perspective that colors how you feel about a person, a situation and even a lifestyle. Viewpoints and ideas built up over years, personal experiences and outside influences all play a part in shaping not just who someone is but how they view themselves, other people and the world around them. Is it time you, or a person you care about, learns to fall in love with fitness?

It is often said that there is a fine line between love and hate. Anyone who adamantly dislikes the idea of a fitness class, personal trainer or gym session, might find that by changing the way they look at a few things they can revolutionize their thoughts, feelings and ultimately their motivation. Anyone feeling a lack of inspiration when it comes to their own health and fitness is going to find it difficult to make the effort to workout and tell themselves that they hate it. However, seeing exercise as a chore rather than something to cherish leads to many people dumping their fitness plans.

So how do you change the idea of exercise from one of dread to one of desire and anticipation? How do you turn a failing  fitness attitude to a motivated move toward a healthier lifestyle? Here are a few tips to let the feel-good fitness factor in:

  • Appreciate exercise. Even if you don’t exercise and at this point don’t really value it as part of your life, think about what keeping fit has done to the lives of other people. People who have lost weight, or recovered from an illness have all benefitted from the healing effects of exercise. Start to see it as a wonderful possibility.
  • Get to know fitness. Exercise is not one dimensional and comes in many shapes and sizes. How can someone hate fitness when there are so many ways that you can exercise? Understanding what is out there can pique your interest and make you feel more involved.
  • Love yourself. Respecting your own being is one of the best ways to really motivate you to want to lead a lifestyle that promotes you, rather than works against you. Look honestly at how your view of yourself and if this view might be standing in the way of you doing the best for your body and mind.
  • Allow for change. With all views, people get so used to saying things that they lose all meaning. They become a symbol of who you are rather than what you think. But you have to sometimes drop ideas and allow for change. Next time you catch yourself either saying you’re not the exercise type, or perhaps saying that you need to get fit but knowing that you have no real intention, stop yourself and say something different.
  • Make an effort and commit. Making an effort isn’t the same as facing an uphill struggle. Making an effort can be invigorating and enjoyable. By putting in some dedication, focus and commitment you can change your relationship with fitness. Realize that you need to put this work in first in order to really benefit from the rewards it brings.
  • Don’t settle. If you want a long-lasting relationship with fitness then don’t start out with something that isn’t right for you just because you don’t know what else is out there. Enjoy trying different exercises and finding the one that suits you.
  • Don’t stagnate. Even those who don’t need to be convinced to get fit can sometimes find that they lose that loving feeling along the way and become bored or reach a fitness plateau. Change the way you are doing something to create some interest. You don’t necessarily need to scrap what you are doing and start again. Small changes can have a big impact.
  • See the adventure ahead. An exercise plan is not just a brief workout affair before resuming your normal sedentary life. While you don’t have to stick rigidly to one path or another, by seeing fitness as part of your life plan, you can make room for it and even enjoy the many challenges along the way.

Motivate and inspire yourself to really begin to love exercise and commit to a positive relationship that is dynamic and interesting too. If you’re having trouble changing, why not come in and see what we can do for you.
