Ways to keep fit while traveling

2014January30_TravelVacation_AEveryone travels for a different reason. For leisure-seekers it means time out from the daily grind, while for busy business professionals travel is all about keeping up with routine and work. Traveling, especially for an extended period of time, can put a spanner in your workout and training routine. People on the move are often lax when it comes to keeping up with their exercise routine, and this can have a knock-on effect on getting back into the swing of fitness when they return home too. This is one reason why it’s important to keep in shape while you travel. It not only keeps you disciplined but can also help keep the weight off during indulgent vacations or rich business dinners.

If there’s no gym available to you while you are away, then think of other ways you can keep active while you are on the go:

Pack some gear

Luggage space can be tight when packing for a trip. However, pack some lightweight fitness gear as a reminder not to slack off. Since you can’t take the gym with you, bring a jump rope, wrist heart rate monitor, resistance band, sweat pants, and lightweight sneakers. This will take up space but it will burn calories from all those extra calories from eating out all the time.

Use the coffee maker and chiller

Your room’s coffee maker is not just for useful for a only great for making coffee; it can also help you stay on your diet. You can use the coffee maker’s hot water to prepare simple meals and avoid the hotel breakfast. Use the hot water to make your own instant oatmeal. The chiller can also be used to store fruit, yogurt, trail mix, granola bars and other healthy foodstuffs.

Go sightseeing on foot

If you’re on holiday then explore by walking around. You really soak up the atmosphere of a place this way too. Even business travelers can usually find the time to take a stroll outside, even if it is just to find a restaurant for dinner. Getting out and about on foot means you burn calories and keep active. Ask the hotel staff for some must-see sights nearby.

Check out the gym

Many people like to work out in the gym because it’s the only environment that really puts them in the exercise zone. The good news is that many hotels offer guests complimentary use of their gym facilities, so it’s worth finding out before you book.

Eat healthy

One of the great things about travelling is the food. While there’s nothing wrong with the odd tempting treat try to order dishes that are steamed, broiled or roasted. Avoid fried or sauteed food or food that has lots of cream or butter added. Chefs are also usually able to accommodate dietary choices too, so don’t be afraid to request healthier preferences. If you do end up grabbing some fast-food while you’re away then avoid combo meals or offers of bigger portions or add-on extras.

Be an early riser

Wake up early and go for a run to make use of those lightweight sneakers you packed Jogging is a great way to stay in shape while taking in the local sights. If you don’t feel like a run, there are many exercises you can do inside your room that don’t need any special equipment.

Explore airport terminals

Airports are like mini cities nowadays. Many of them contain cinemas, malls, salons and restaurants and are as big as a small village. The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for example, is one of the largest airports in the world. It is a massive complex of stores, shops, waiting areas, hotels, parks, salons, bars, and restaurants. The same is true for O’Hare in Chicago, Frankfurt Airport in Germany, as well as Hong Kong International Airport and the Tokyo International Airport in Japan. Explore, walk around and marvel at these huge structures, rather than just sitting in the departure area.

Keeping fit while on vacation or traveling will help you stay in shape, burn excess calories, help you sleep better and keep up your stamina.
