Part 3: Xtreme Eating Awards 2014!

dietandnutrition_Oct15_BIf you think about your diet and what you eat, what’s your instant reaction? Do you feel as if you eat a lot of fresh, healthy dishes or do you sometimes weaken and grab junk food? What about when you eat out? Do you check the calorie, fat and sugar content of dishes or do you opt for what you think might be a less indulgent option? With nutrition being so important if you want to follow a firm fitness track, you certainly need to be aware of foods that are part of the Xtreme Eating Awards 2014! Here at Kaia, we put your nutritional needs on the menu with our programs to make sure our Kaia girls are following a diet that supports their best workout efforts.

We’ve already looked at six out of nine of the ‘winners’ of the Xtreme Eating Awards 2014, an annual list of some of the highest calorie restaurant meals that are often high in saturated fats, salt and sugar. Here we look at the last three.

Number 7 Signature Deep Dish Chicken Bacon Ranch Pizza at BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse

To be fair, this hardly sounds like the slimmer’s option but more of a weekend blow-out meal. However, if you are imagining a huge pizza then think again because it is the small size which slices up into a whopping 2,160 calories. In case you forgot what your daily recommended amount is, that would be around 2,000 calories for women and 2,500 calories for men. That is a huge amount of cardio burn-off for a piece of pizza pie!

Number 8 Chevy’s Super Cinco Combo at Chevys Fresh Mex

Do you see the word fresh and instantly think of healthy, low-calorie food? Think again because this Mexican dish is definitely not on the menu if you are watching your weight. For a huge 1,920 calories you get a chicken and a beef enchilada, a crispy or soft beef taco, as well as a hand-rolled pork tamale and handcrafted Chile Relleno. There’s also chips and salsa to get your appetite going, not to mention the sides that come with this, including rice, sweet corn tamalito and a choice of beans.

You also get a hearty 36g of saturated fat, way more than the 20g for women and 30g for men recommended each day. The sodium level is higher than the daily recommendation too, close to 4,000mg compared to a recommended 2,300mg per day.

Number 9 Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Cake Cheesecake at The Cheesecake Factory

Be wary of the calorie-rich desserts too. There’s little points chowing down on a salad only to add 1,500 calories with fudge cake and caramel. Does it sound like a sweet temptation? It certainly is with 21 teaspoons of sugar, which is considerably more than the recommendation from health experts of 6 teaspoons for women and 9 teaspoons for men each day. Well, at least it’s low in fat right? Not quite! With 43g of saturated fats it is more than two day’s worth for women.

You could argue that many of these dishes are really the type of meals that you might share, but actually many diners are tucking into these meals alone. Even if you are sharing a small pizza, a Mexican feast and a cheesecake, you are still going to be topping the nutritional recommendation charts.

Suddenly a healthy salad with some fresh vegetables seems a lot more appetizing? Want some advice on what to eat and on what not to eat? We can help guide you so get in touch.
