As us ladies start to age, our bodies don’t look as sleek and sexy as they did in our early 20’s. A common problem area that seems to get bigger (sometimes literally!) is our butt which in many women can be affected by unsightly cellulite – especially after childbirth. It may comfort you to know that this problem is quite normal among women, as we are prone to it because of higher estrogen levels. Thankfully, there are number of exercises women can do to fight cellulite and smack our behinds into shape.
Essentially, cellulite is extra fat stored in between the skin and muscle tissue, which causes dimple-like indentations to appear on your body most often on the buttocks and thighs. While the focus of this article is to explore exercises that target cellulite on the butt, it should be noted that an even better way to fight this unsightly condition is with a well balanced diet.
But without further ado, here are some exercises women can do to lose cellulite.
Upright Posterior Leg Lifts
This exercise fights cellulite by targeting three muscles in your rump: gluteus maximus, gluteus minimus and gluteus medius (try saying that three times fast!). Additionally it also exercises your hamstrings.
To do this exercise, stand upright, and extend one leg backwards. As you do this, point your toe and make sure to keep your leg straight; you should begin to feel a tightness. Once you’ve extended it back as far as you can, relax and slowly bring your leg back to standing position. Do this 10 to 15 times for three sets.
Additionally you can grip a chair or counter while doing this exercise so that it’s easier to balance yourself, and you don’t tumble over. And for a more intense workout, you can strap on ankle weights.
This classic exercise offers a fantastic way to target cellulite on the butt. While most of you reading this probably know how to do a lunge already, here’s a refresher just in case. Start by taking a big step forward, and then drop your knee down to a 90 degree angle. Once you’ve reached this posture, push your body back to a standing position using the leg that’s bent. To up the intensity level and increase calorie burn, add a set of dumbbells to this exercise.
Not only is stair climbing an exceptional way to rid yourself of cellulite and sculpt your dream booty, but it also offers a great lower body workout that exercises your hamstrings, hip flexors, calves and quadriceps. If done on a regular basis, it’s a surefire way to tone your legs and lose thigh cellulite as well.
To perform stair climbing you can either hike up a flight of stairs of your choosing or use a stair machine at your local gym. If you choose the latter, make sure that you’re standing straight up while on the stair machine, and not resting your weight on the machine’s handles. This ups the intensity and increases calorie burn. Also as a final note, make sure to keep your knees slightly bent while climbing stairs to avoid injury.
