We get it – it’s hard to build health and wellness into your modern lifestyle. We all lead busy, largely sedentary lives, and all too often it can feel like there just aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done – perhaps even before you’ve given thought to exercise or other activities that contribute to your own wellbeing and mindfulness. But by making a conscious effort to fit these few habits into your daily routine, you’ll be well on the road to a new you.
With the number of hours so many of us spend sat at our desks tapping away at computers, it’s no real wonder that it’s a challenge to stay active. It’s not even just the time you’re actually at work, either – it’s just as much about the sedentary journey there by car, the temptation to use the elevator rather than take the stairs, and so on. And when it gets to the end of a long day at the office, who really has the energy to hit the gym, at least on a regular basis?
It’s not all doom and gloom, though. Whatever form movement might take – whether it’s taking the stairs to the office, bouncing on an exercise ball as you wade through your emails rather than sitting idly in a swivel chair, or breaking up the day with a team-wide set of sit-ups, there are countless ways to squeeze exercise into your 9-5 routine. If you’re lucky, your employer is one of the growing number providing lunchtime yoga classes or massage sessions – yes, massage has health benefits too, and practically counts as exercise in our book. But even if you’re not one of the fortunate, a little imagination can go a long way to building your own workday fitness regime.
Connect with and support others
Health is about more than just physical activity, of course. It’s also about fostering a sense of mental wellbeing and mindfulness. Central to that is staying in regular contact with the people most important in your life, the ones who make you who you are. You know who your true friends are – the ones you can laugh with when things are great, and into whose shoulder you can cry when you’re at your lowest – and those are the ones to hang on to.
Whether you catch up with those special people over an early-morning workout, breakfast and coffee before work, a cheeky early-evening glass of wine or even just five minutes out of the office for a breather, making time to do so every day will allow you to stay in tune with yourself as well as those around you. Your wholesome approach to wellness will inspire your friends, too, so they’ll also benefit.
Eat well – and be still
We’re all guilty of being too busy, and of trying to achieve too much – but when we begin to truly cram too much into the time we have, it’s inevitably the important things that slip first. There’s nothing more vital than taking the time to eat properly, and getting the sleep our bodies need to function fully. Make the most of your food choices to ensure that you’re giving yourself the nutrients that will power you through the rest of your busy week – and then give yourself time to sit down, breathe, and enjoy your food, rather than inhaling your breakfast in two minutes and scoffing a lunchtime sandwich at your desk, as too many of us do. Don’t forget to stay hydrated with plenty of water and other fluids, either.
Stillness is important, too. As much as you need exercise to stay fit and healthy, it’s just as vital to take time to sit or lay still, silent and alone, and to have the opportunity to calmly reflect on life. It’s an opportunity to feel gratitude for everything you already have, as well – itself crucial in helping you achieve contentment and to be at one with yourself. And of course, listen to your body and what it is telling you – it’s a complex machine and it knows what it needs far better than you do. Pay attention to your body’s signals and it will give you the wellness you desire. Likewise, know that there are limits to how much you can realistically achieve each day, and that it’s okay if you miss your goals sometimes – you’re only human, and it just means that you’ll just have something else to aim for tomorrow.
